Read carefully the following excerpt and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: ●summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then ●comment on whether our brains will get lazy in a world run by intelligent machines. You can support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. With intelligent machines to do the thinking, will our brains get lazy? Changing technology stimulates the brain and increases intelligence. But that may only be true if the technology challenges us. In a world run by intelligent machines, our lives could get a lot simpler. Would that make us less intelligent? Artificial intelligence is taking over many human jobs. For instance, planes are being flown much of the time by automatic pilots. And the complex problem of controlling air traffic around large modern airports is also achieved by artificial intelligence that operates well beyond the capacity of mere human air traffic controllers. As machines get smarter, they will do more of our thinking for us and make life easier. In the future, the electronic assistant will develop to the point that it serves similar functions as a real living butler, fulfilling requests such as: “Organize a dinner party for six on Thursday, Jeeves, and invite the usual guests.” At that point, our long struggle with challenging technologies is at an end. Like Be Wooster, we can take it easy knowing that the hard work of planning and organizing is being done by a better brain-the electronic assistant. Starved of mental effort, our brains will regress.

The most interesting architectural phenomenon of the 1970’s was the enthusiasm for ref
urbishing old buildings.Obviously, this was not an entirely new phenomenon. What is new is the wholesale interest in reusing the past, in recycling in adaptive rehabilitation.A few tieal efforts, such as ghirardelli square in San Francisco, proved their financial viability in 1960s, but it was in the 1970’s, with strong government support through tax incentives and rapid depreciation. As well as growing interest in ecology issues, that recycling became a major factor on the urban scene.

One of the most comprehensive ventures was the restoration and transformation of Boston’s eighteenth century Faneuil Hall and the Quincy Market, designed in 1824.This section had fallen on hard times, but beginning with the constuction of a new city hall immediately adjacent, it has returned to life with the intelligent reuse of these fine old buildings under the design leadership of Benjamin Thomson. He has provided a marvelous setting for dining, shopping, professional offices, and simply walking.

Butler Square, in Minnespois, exemplifies major changes in its comples of offices, commercial space, and public amenities carved out of a massive pile designed in 1906 as a hardware warehouse. The exciting interior timber structure of the’building was highlighted by cutting light courts through the interior and adding large skylights.

San Antonio,Texas, offers an object lesson for numerous other cities combating urban decay.Rather than bringing in the bulldozers, San Antonio’s leaders rehabilitated existing structures, while simultaneously cleaning up the San Antonio River, which menders through the business district.

A.During the 1970’s, old buildings in many cities were recycled for modern use.

B.Recent interest in ecology issues has led to the cleaning up of many rivers.

C.The San Antonio example shows that bulldozers are not the way to fight urban decay.

D.Strong government support has made adaptive rehabilitation a reality in Boston.

37.What is the space at Quincy Market now used for?

A.Boston’s new city hall.

B.Sports and recreational facilities.

C.Commercial and industrial warehouses.

D.Restaurant, offices, and stores.

A.San FranciscoB.Boston.

C.Minneapois. D.San Antonio.

39.When was the Butler Square building originally built?

A.In the eighteenth century.

B.In the early nineteenth century.

C.In the late nineteenth century.

D.In the early twentieth century.

40.What is the author’s opinion of the San Antonio project?

A.It is clearly the best of the projects discussed.

B.It is a good project that could be copied in other cities.

C.The extensive use of bulldozers made the project unnecessarily costly.

D.The work done on the river was more important than the work done on the buildings.

Robert had just moved into the street and he felt strange that he was not wanted. He k
new that perhaps the other boys were trying to get an idea of what kind of a boy he was. This did not help him to make himself less lonely. He was new and he had to be tested. Still, proving himself would not be all that easy. He did not want to run with the boys or get into something against the law to prove that he was strong. No! He must show what he was made of in a more helpful way. That’s when he got the idea.

The next day was Saturday. He knew that most of the boys would be down on the playground and choose up sides for the Saturday game. Robert knew he could play well and that just might be enough to prove he was strong, and to make friends with them. He arrived early and did his step exercises. He shot the ball several times and did some other exercises—the most difficult and most wonderful in basketball. Then the boys came. Robert went through what he had done before the game and showed what he could do. No one said a word. The boys just looked at each other and thought about it. In the end, when it was all over, the biggest of the group just smiled and shook his head. Robert knew he had made it.

1. What does “This did not help to make him less lonely” mean?()

A、Robert felt more lonely because the other boys wanted to test him.

B、Robert did not want himself to be less lonely.

C、Robert felt as lonely as before when the other boys tried to find out what kind of a boy he was.

D、The other boys did not want to make Robert feel less lonely.

It was not yet eleven o'clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger
who had obtained his transportation at that unusual hour by promising an extra fare. While the youth stood on the landing-place searching in his pocket for money, the ferryman lifted a lantern,by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon,he took a very accurate survey of the stranger's figure. He was a young man of barely eighteen years, evidently country bred, and now,as it seemed,on his first visit to town. He was wearing a tough gray coat, which was in good shape, but which had seen many winters before this. The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular legs;his stockings of blue yarn must have been the work of a mother or sister, and on his head was a three-cornered hat, which in its better days had perhaps sheltered the grayer head of the lad's father. In his left hand was a walking stick, and his equipment was completed by a leather bag not so abundantly stocked as to inconvenience the strong shoulders on which it hung. Brown, curly hair,well-shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature's gifts, and worth all that art could have done for his adornment. The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step,as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked,he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of the little metropolis of a New England colony.

68. The stockings that Robin wore were obviously _____.

69. From the way he looked,it was evident that Robin was ____.

70.How did Robin appear as he walked into the town?
