Part A

Directions: Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

The United States Congress is a bicameral legislature. Two Houses-Senate and House of Representatives make the laws. Before a bill may be sent to the President to sign, both houses must approve. When great agreement exists on a bill, the law moves quickly. However, most suggested laws are complex and relate to interests and conflicts which need debate and careful consideration.

Both houses of Congress use the committee system to handle the numerous bills. A bill is referred to the committee responsible for that category -- whether taxation, foreign affairs, housing or whatever. In the committee the bill is studied, arguments are collected for and against, and advice is gathered from experts on the subject. Citizens have the chance to influence legislation through the committee system. If the committee votes favorably, the bill goes before the entire house. Usually, committee approval means favorable action by the Senate and House of Representatives.

As a result, membership on the more important committees is eagerly sought. How long a senator or representative has served in Congress is most important in assigning committee memberships. Usually the majority political party receives a majority of the memberships of each committee. In this way the party controls decisions because the real work and power of Congress lies in the system of committees. Some people protest that this system restricts laws, but most see this as the system that works best.

By using the context and word part clues, we may conclude that "bicameral" means _______.

A.Republicans and Democrats

B.two Houses

C.congressional system

D.law making procedure

Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36to 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A), B), C)and D).

You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. The challenge of writing a powerful cove letter(附信) can lead job candidates to search endlessly for advice, but be careful. While you likely will find some valuable advice, you may come across a few tips that could mislead you.

“You need a lengthy cover letter. ” This probably is one of the “bad cover letter tips. ” Think about it :hiring managers have piles of resumes and cover letters to review. If yours is longer than the rest, it might not get read at all. Aim to get all of your points across in three brief paragraphs: a clear introduction that lets employer know which job you are applying for and why you are interested in the position; a paragraph that includes a few specific examples of how to have excelled(擅长) in past roles that are relevant to the open position; and a concluding paragraph that tells employers how you will benefit their company and requests a future meeting.

“Your cover letter is less important than your resume. ” Some hiring managers shove(随手扔) cover letters to the side, but most do not. Because you never know what type of hiring manager you are dealing with, it is best to submit a nice cover letter. While some employers place less emphasis on cover letters, others decide who to interview based on them. Remember that the point of a cover letter is to tell employers something that makes them want to meet you.

36.Why should job candidates be careful when searching for advice to write a cover letter?

A.Some tips are not practical.

B.Some tips could be misleading.

C.It is impossible to get useful tips.

D.It is difficult to find valuable tips.

A.Your expected salary.

B.Your hobbies and interests.

C.Your request for a meeting.

D.Your professional background.

37.Why shouldn’t you write a lengthy cover letter?

A.Hiring managers may not read it at all.

B.Well-written cover letters may be read first.

C.It is difficult to write a good long cover letter.

D.You are unable to express your points clearly.

40.According to the writer, the purpose of a cover letter is to .

Newspapers, along with reporting the news, instruct, entertain, and give opinions. An impo
rtant way for reading a large, big-city newspaper is knowing how to take it apart. Can you find these separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, classified ads? Does your paper have other sections?

News stories give facts, not the author's opinions. Editorials do the opposite; you can expect an editorial to take sides. Some newspaper editorials have a by-line with the author's name, but many newspapers have unsigned editorials. These reflect the opinions of the publisher or editor.

You can be a better reader if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, you can expect headlines to omit unnecessary words. You can expect to find the most important facts in the lead paragraph (the first paragraph) of a news story. You can expect important news items to be on the front page. You can expect less important items to be on the inside pages.

Most of all, the more you know about current news, the more you will understand what is in the newspaper; important stories are generally presented one day and followed up on following days. So, an important way for reading newspapers is reading one frequently.

To read a large newspaper, a good way is ______.

A.to read it section be section

B.to do some paper-cutting

C.to find separate sections and read accordingly

D.to predict what is inside the newspaper

Read carefully the following excerpt and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: ●summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then ●comment on whether our brains will get lazy in a world run by intelligent machines. You can support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. With intelligent machines to do the thinking, will our brains get lazy? Changing technology stimulates the brain and increases intelligence. But that may only be true if the technology challenges us. In a world run by intelligent machines, our lives could get a lot simpler. Would that make us less intelligent? Artificial intelligence is taking over many human jobs. For instance, planes are being flown much of the time by automatic pilots. And the complex problem of controlling air traffic around large modern airports is also achieved by artificial intelligence that operates well beyond the capacity of mere human air traffic controllers. As machines get smarter, they will do more of our thinking for us and make life easier. In the future, the electronic assistant will develop to the point that it serves similar functions as a real living butler, fulfilling requests such as: “Organize a dinner party for six on Thursday, Jeeves, and invite the usual guests.” At that point, our long struggle with challenging technologies is at an end. Like Be Wooster, we can take it easy knowing that the hard work of planning and organizing is being done by a better brain-the electronic assistant. Starved of mental effort, our brains will regress.
