The following are all bad reading habits EXCEPT __________.

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are poor readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never get over them. The main problem lies in language itself—words. Single words have little meaning until they are combined into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He reads one word at a time, often regressing to reread words or passages. Regression, or looking back over what you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which slows down the speed of reading is vocalization—sounding each word either orally or mentally as one reads. To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called accelerator (加速器), which moves a bar down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to “stretch” him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and vocalization virtually impossible. At first, comprehension is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skills improved a lot after some training.

A、regression

B、reading for ideas only

C、vocalization

D、word-by-word reading

Advertising informs consumers about new products available on the market. It gives us i
nformation about everything from shampoo to tooth-paste to computers and cars. But there is one series problem with this. The "information" is actually very often "misinformation".It tells us the products, benefits but hides their disadvantages.Advertising not only leads us to buy things that we don't need and can't afford, but it also confuses our sense of reality.

Advertisers use many methods to get us to buy their products. One of their most successful methods is to make us feel dissatisfied with ourselves and our imperfect lives.Advertisements show us who we aren't and what we don't have."Why don't I have any dates (约会)?" a good-looking girl sadly asks in a commercial."Here," replies her roommate, "Try Zoom tooth-paste!" Of course she tried it, and immediately the whole football team falls in love with her."That's a stupid commercial," we might say.But we still buy Zoom tooth-paste out of fear of being unpopular and having no friends.

If fear is the negative motive (动机) for buying a product, then wanting a good self-image is the positive reason for choosing it.Each of us has a mental picture of the kind of person we would like to be.For example, a modern young woman might like to think that she looks like a beautiful movie star.A middle-aged man might want to see himself as a strong, attractive athlete.Advertisers know this. They write specific ads to make certain groups of people choose their products.

Advertisers get psychologists to study the way consumers think and their reasons for choosing one brand instead of another. These experts tell advertisers about the motives of fear and self-image.They also inform. them about recent studies with colors and words. They have found that certain colors on the package of an attractive product will cause people to reach out and take that package instead of buying an identical (同一的、 相等的) product with different colors.

Many people believe that advertising does not affect them. They like to think they make wise choices.Unfortunately, they probably don't realize the powerful effect of advertising. They may not clearly understand that advertisers spend billions of dollars each year in aggressive (强有力的) competition for our money, and they are extremely successful.

1.What’s the purpose of advertising()?

A.To introduce people the feature of the goods.

B.To have people to buy new products on the market.

C.To make people know how to use the products.

D.To tell people how to save money while buying goods.

2.One of the disadvantages of advertising is to().

A.lead people to buy bad-quality things

B.make people confused about choosing goods

C.make people buy more things than needed

D.inform. people the products’ benefits

3.Advertisement may make people think that()

A.their lives are not good enough

B.their behaviors are imperfect

C.they don’t have enough money to buy things

D.they look poor without buying advertise goods

4.What can psychologists tell the advertisers()

A.The reasons for bad sale of some goods.

B.What brand is better than others?

C.How to control the qualities of goods.

D.People’s opinions about current colors.

5.It’s implied in the last paragraph that those who don’t believe

advertising().

A.should refuse to buy goods advertised

B.may also be influenced by advertising

C.have more freedom to buy things than others

D.can save money without buying the advertised goods

It is customary for adults to forget how hard and dull and long school is. The learning

by memory of all the basic things one must know is a most incredible and unending effort. School is not easy and it is not for the most part very much fun, but then, if you are very lucky, you may find a real teacher. Three teachers in a lifetime are the very best of my luck. My first was a science and math teacher in high school, my second, a professor of creative writing at Stanford, and my third was my friend and partner, ED Rickets.

I have to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that three are as few as there are any other great artists. It might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.

My three teachers had these things in common: They all loved what they were doing; they did not tell, but stimulated a burning desire to know. Under their influence, the horizons sprang wide and fear went away and the unknown became knowable.

I shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery. She aroused us to shouting, book-waving discussions. She had the noisiest class in school and she did not even seem to know it. We could never stick to the subject. Our speculation (思绪) ranged the world. She breathed curiosity into us so that we brought in facts or truths shielded in our hands like captured fireflies (萤火虫).

She was fired, and perhaps rightly so, for failing to teach fundamentals. Such things must be learned. But she left a passion in us for the pure knowable world and she inflamed me with a curiosity which has never left. I have had many teachers who told me soon-forgotten facts but only three who created in me a new attitude a new hunger. What deathless power lies in the hands of such a person?

21. In the writer’s opinion, school life is usually .

A. exciting B. interesting C. tiresome D. challenging

22. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that .

A. it is easy to find great artists as well as great teachers.

B. there are few great teachers but many great artists.

C. the greatest artists are not easy to find; nor are the greatest teachers.

D. being a great teacher is a great art to learn because teachers spread knowledge.

23. In the writer’s opinion, a good teacher should .

A. teach students the fundamental things

B. stick to one subject and be strict with students

C. teach students the knowledge ranging the world

D. arouse students’ curiosity and desire for the world

24. The writer’s first teacher was dismissed mainly because .

A. her class was the noisiest in school

B. she did not teach basic knowledge in class

C. she let students shout and wave books in class

D. she did not know how to teach basic knowledge effectively

25. What is the best title of this article?

A. The Teachers in My Life B. How to Become a Teacher

C. What to Teach at School D. What Makes a Good Teacher
