Traditional Ideas about Marriage

Almost every society has certain traditional ideas about marriage. For example, most societies expect men and women to marry. Most cultures also have traditions about the role and duties of a husband and a wife. Traditionally, the husband is expected to earn a living, and the wife is expected to keep house and raise children.

Many Americans did not follow traditional marriage patterns. For example,a large number of married couples share responsibilities that have been traditionally handled by either the husband or the wife. An increasing number of married women have paying jobs and help support their families financially. In 1940s,about 15 percent of all married women earned money. In the early 1990s,about 60 percent held a full-or part-time job. More and more husbands share responsibilities traditionally handled by women, such as cooking, doing housework, and caring for children.

On the average, men and women stay single longer than they once did. In 1950s,men married at an average age of 23,and women married at an average age of 20. By the mid-1990s,the average marriage age was about 26.5 for men and about 24.5 for women.

An increasing number of people choose not to marry. If a man and a woman wish to avoid marriage, they may decide to live together with no formal obligations to each other. This arrangement is more common among young adults, but some couples of all ages live together without marrying. (239 words)

In 1955, a man named Raymond Kroc entered a partnership with two brothers named McDona
ld. They opened a popular restaurant in California which sold food that was easy to prepare and serve quickly. Hamburgers, French fries, and cold drinks were the main food there. Kroc opened similar eating places under the same name, "McDonald's", and they were an instant success. He later took over the company, and today it is one of the most famous and successful "fast-food" in America and the world. Why was his idea so successful? Probably the most important reason was that this timing was right. In the 1950s, most married women stayed home to keep house and take care of their children. In the 1960s, many women returned to the workplace. This meant they had less time and energy to do housework and preparation of meals, so they relied more on "TV dinners" and fast-food restaurant. Single parents also have little time to spend in the kitchen. People living alone also depend on this type of food, since cooking for one is often more trouble than it is worth.

Fast-food is not part of the diet of all Americans. Another trend of the 1960s, sometimes called the back-to-nature movement influenced many people to avoid food that was packaged or processed(处理). This preference for natural food continued to this day.

From the success of Raymond Kroc’s fast-food business, we can say that social economic trends influence where and what we eat.

According to the majority of Americans, women are ...

According to the majority of Americans, women are every bit as capable of being good political leaders as men. The same can be said of their ability to dominate the corporate boardroom. And according to a new Pew Research Center survey on women and leadership, most Americans find women indistinguishable from men on key leadership traits such as intelligence and capacity for innovation, with many saying they’re stronger than men in terms of being passionate and organized leaders. So why, then, are women in short supply at the top of government and business in the United States? According to the public, at least, it’s not that they lack toughness, management talent or proper skill sets. It’s also not all about work-life balance.Although economic research and previous survey findings have shown that career interruptions related to motherhood may make it harder for women to advance in their careers and compete for top executive jobs, relatively few adults in the recent survey point to this as a key barrier for women seeking leadership roles. Only about one-in-five say women’s family responsibilities are a major reason why there aren’t more females in top leadership positions in business and politics. Instead, topping the list of reasons, about four-in-ten Americans point to a double standard for women seeking to climb to the highest levels of either politics or business, where they have to do more than their male counterparts to prove themselves. Similar shares say the electorate (选民) and corporate America are just not ready to put more women in top leadership positions. As a result, the public is divided about whether the imbalance in corporate America will change in the foreseeable future, even though women have made major advances in the workplace. While 53% believe men will continue to hold more top executive positions in business in the future, 44% say it’s only a matter of time before as many women are in top executive positions as men. Americans are less doubtful when it comes to politics: 73% expect to see a female president in their lifetime. (2019.6月四级真题) Q: What do we learn from previous survey findings about women seeking leadership roles?

A、They have unconquerable difficulties on their way to success.

B、They are lacking in confidence when competing with men.

C、Their failures may have something to do with family duties.

D、Relatively few are hindered in their career advancement.

The world of taxi drivers is dominated by men. But there is one small taxi company in De
lhi, where all the drivers and passengers are female. Women’s safety is a hot topic in India at the moment, so it's proving a very popular service.

“When I’m on the road driving our taxi I feel very proud, because this is the first taxi service only for women,” says 31yearold Shanti Sharma, who is one of eight female drivers with a taxi service called Cabs for Women by Women.

The last couple of months, since the rape and murder in the city of a college student travelling on a bus, have been particularly busy for her and her colleagues.

“After this case, our workload has increased so much,” says Sharma.“Women who used other cab services are also turning to us now.”

Most women in Delhi say they routinely face harassment(骚扰), and worse, especially on public transport.

Sharma, a single parent with three daughters, has been working as a taxi driver since 2011, when the service was first set up, and it has changed her life. This is the first time that she has earned enough—about 250 a month—to support her family.

Of course, she and the other female taxi drivers are completely outnumbered by male cabbies.“When I park somewhere there are always men there and inevitably five or six of them get together and hang out, ” she says.“I’m usually the only woman in the parking lot, so I just stay inside the car.”

It’s not much better when she is out on the road. Sharma says the male drivers give her a hard time.“As soon as they see a woman at the wheel they start honking(按喇叭) for no reason. They’ll try to overtake you. I’m always worrying about how to avoid getting hit by someone.”

The company behind Cabs for Women by Women, Sakha Consulting Wings, had a number of goals when it set up the service .It wanted to give women from poor backgrounds an opportunity to earn money. By putting women in charge of technologies, it also wanted to change people’s attitudes, and open up boundaries for women.

21、The taxi service Cabs for Women by Women _____.

22、Why are women who used other cab services turning to Cabs for Women by Women?

A、Because it is cheap.

B、Because it is safe.

23、What do we know about Sharma?

A、She is the first female taxi driver in Delhi.

B、She lives in harmony with her husband.
